Russian lacquer boxes, also known as Russian lacquer miniatures, are hand-painted works of art created by artists in Russia. These boxes are typically made from papier-mâché and then meticulously hand-painted with intricate decorative motifs. They originated in the late 1700s and became status symbols among the aristocracy and wealthy classes. The complexity of their design and decoration increased as demand grew. The artists who create these boxes often attend one of four exclusive village art schools in Russia: Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstera, or Kholui.
This 4 by 6 by 1.5 box is painted on shell.
