James and Kathleen have both been potters since adolescence, they have been working together for almost 30 years out of their home studio in the redwood forest of Sonoma County on the bank of the Russian River. Their pottery is sold through the studio gallery as well as many fine galleries.
Manganese is used to stain clays (using black) and to impart fired speckling (as a decorative effect). The applications include the use of MnO2 as an inorganic pigment in ceramics and in glassmaking. Manganese is a colorant used in bodies and glazes, producing blacks, browns, and purples.
